New Release by Leoma Gilley
In 1989, linguist Leoma Gilley and her colleague Janice moved to Khartoum – the world’s hottest capital – to improve the Shilluk writing system. Linguists have struggled since 1912 to develop an adequate writing system for the Shilluk people of southern Sudan. This language issue helped spark a 21-year civil war, driving many Shilluks to seek refuge in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital. Moving on from her first adventure in Launching into the Unknown, Leoma continues on in Sudan’ s capital, each day bringing a new challenge or celebration, including: bureaucratic red tape, successful workshops, cultural misunderstandings, enjoying unexpected friendships over plates of fuul, swirling dust storms, finding humor in the challenge of keeping electronics sand-free, and blistering heat. Will they convince the Shilluk people to embrace a new spelling system? Can they overcome government restrictions to continue their vital work?
New Release by Art Stewart

In addition to authoring scientific articles and technical reports, his poetry has been published in various anthologies and a dozen different journals, including Eclectic Literary Forum, New Millennium Writings, Lullwater Review, the Journal of the American Medical Association.
AGT Member Brenda Sellers
to Speak to the Knoxville Writers Guild
Thursday, March 6, 7:00 p.m. at the Emporium on Gay Street
Brenda Sellers worked for ten years on her book “You Slept Where?” – Calamities of a Clumsy Businesswoman. She learned a lot about the toil and cost of getting a book published, but since publication, she’s experienced drive-by book signings, as well as the traditional ones, podcasts, interviews, television appearances, celebrity contacts, fan mail, and gifts from people and places mentioned in the book. Most importantly, while not getting rich from the book, she’s managed to do some good in the world with it. Part of the story is encouragement for those who live with Alzheimer’s and PTSD. The book enabled Brenda to donate and raise funds for those causes and lift awareness. Come to the Emporium on March 6 where you’ll learn how to persevere to publication, how to use some out-of-the-box-ideas for marketing a book, and how to make the world a better place.
David Johnston
New Member of AGT
David spent most of his professional life as a general manager of Marriott hotels, taking him across the country to live in every regional area of the U.S. except the PNW. In addition to the hotel work, David owned and operated a family lake resort in Minnesota for eight years. The opportunity to live in so many places afforded David the chance to pursue his love of nature. He has spent a lifetime exploring the world of forests and mountain life, both physically and spiritually. Having hiked throughout the U.S. and Europe, David most enjoys time spent in the mountains of East Tennessee.
At home with his wife, Maria, there are many chores associated with country life, ably assisted by their two beagles, Susie and Hank. Hikes on the mountain where they live are a regular pastime and destination trips for big hikes happen once or twice each year.
David is currently working on his certification as a forest therapy coach, looking forward to helping others connect to the wonders of nature.
