Steven Cornelius

Steven was born and raised in northeast Mississippi. His parents were voracious readers and sparked a love of books within him from a very early age. When night fell, rather than watch television, he and his family read until bedtime. Steven searched the school and town libraries for anything related to science, history and classical fiction. When not helping with farm related chores, he often sat quietly in his dad’s shop when it was too hot to work listening to his father and other kin spin highly embellished accounts of mostly mundane daily affairs. Those times gave him a deep appreciation for a story well told. Starting at age thirteen, he began working as a short order cook and continued to do so until his sophomore year in college. This employment lasted throughout high school and his first three semesters of college.

Undergraduate and graduate studies at The University of Mississippi broadened his horizons and further developed his love of the written word. While at Ole Miss, Steven earned an Air Force commission, entering active duty service as a Second Lieutenant, and served thirty one years, retiring at the rank of colonel. His writing often draws upon experiences and memories for his writing, stockpiled during years of travel. After retiring from government service in 2015, Steven decided it was time to get serious about his lifelong passion for writing.

Steven’s short stories have been published in Mississippi Magazine, The Galway, Ireland Review, New Orleans Living, The Daily Corinthian and Daily Leader Newspapers. Steven has written nine books, including the Distant Traveler series, El Mecanico, a book about one immigrant family’s experience in America and one hundred and forty short stories about life in the rural south.
