Authors Guild of Tennessee is a group of about fifty published authors who live in East Tennessee. Many of our stories are set in this area, reflecting either its present-day culture or its history.

Mission Statement: To celebrate Tennessee’s rich literary tradition through opportunities for people to get to know authors more personally, discover details about their books, and find inspiration through their challenges and successes, which ultimately strengthens a desire to read while also serving as a vital catalyst for our authors to continue writing and selling their books.

August Meeting of Authors Guild of Tennessee

We have set our next meeting for August 5 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Farragut, starting at 10:30 for social time and book exchange. *

Continuing our series on how our members started writing and the ways in which their backgrounds have influenced their genres and styles, our featured speaker will be Jerry Morton.

Jerry grew up in a Coast Guard family who moved often, resulting in his attending eight different public schools and learning about the different subcultures in northern and midwestern states. He first lived in the south when he attended Centre College of Kentucky.

After receiving an M.S. degree in School Psychology, he was drafted into the army. From basic training he went on to complete Advanced Infantry Training and Infantry Officer Candidate School to become commissioned as a second lieutenant. Reluctant Lieutenant: From Basic to OCS in the Sixties is his memoir of that experience.

Jerry later received a Ph.D in school psychology, assisting Tennessee school systems to develop their psychology programs. From this experience, he has co-authored the book A School for Healing: Alternative Strategies For Teaching At-Risk Students.

Most recently, Jerry has been working on a collection of short stories related to his early life into his adulthood, focusing on displays of human kindness.

Be sure you attend this meeting to hear from Jerry about his diverse experiences that shaped his writing and to stay current with our group’s activities

* Only fully vaccinated people, please.
