One look at what Jody Sims has done with her life and it’s apparent that she works from the heart – a heart that is deeply committed to making the world a better place through inspiration and empowerment.
As the former Chief Advancement Officer of Girl Scouts San Diego, Jody directed communications, media, and marketing. During more than 16 years of working with the Girl Scouts, Jody imagined, created, produced, and led numerous innovative programs, events, campaigns and initiatives. They included, among many others: G.E.M.M. (Girls Empowered to Make Movies), a groundbreaking program to help girls learn how to express themselves through the power of film; Healthy Girls Healthy Lives Symposiums designed to provide parents and adult volunteers with critical information on girls issues; P.H.I.Z. (Positive Healthy Image Zone) an interactive curriculum to help girls better understand their bodies, the dangers of dieting, and making healthy choices; R.A.N.T. (Revolt Against Negative Talk) a program to combat bullying; the Girl Scout Basketball League; Big & Little Golf Tournaments.
In 2010 in San Antonio, TX and in 2011 in Indianapolis, IN, Jody produced the Final Four Fling, an event staged during the women’s final four college basketball championships to raise awareness of the devastating impact of homophobia in women’s sports.

Jody owned and published the San Diego Women’s Directory, the Women’s Times newspaper, and the Youth Sports Directory and Resource Guide of San Diego County. She founded and was executive director of the Pacific Women’s Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization providing college scholarships, uniforms and equipment to girls and women in sports. As owner of Jody Sims Enterprises, she offered a variety of creative services, including graphic design and event production for more than 25 years.

Honors include a 1994 Soroptimist Award for Advancing the Status of Women, the 1994 GLAAD San Diego President’s Award, and a 1990 Women’s Enterprise Award of Excellence from Women’s Enterprises Association. She was named the Women in Business Advocate of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1991, and was included among San Diego Magazine’s “People to Watch in ’92.” Jody worked with the NFL Players Association to establish the Citizen Athlete Awards and was a longtime ambassador for the San Diego State University Women’s basketball team. She served on the San Diego County Substance Abuse Summit Sports Work Group, the San Diego County Girls Issues Group, the WUSA San Diego Spirit (women’s professional soccer) Advisory Board, and the Balboa Park Kate Sessions statue committee.
Jody studied fine art at Illinois State University in the early 1970s. She was a student of the late Reed Cardwell at the Art Academy of San Diego prior to moving to Knoxville, TN in 2014. Her work was exhibited at Expressive Arts Studio “Illness as Inspiration” and at the Hyde Gallery “Artists for Healing” in San Diego; and has been exhibited in shows at the Emporium Gallery and the A1LabArts gallery in Knoxville. Additionally, her painting “Reign Delay” a portrait of the legendary coach Pat Summitt was juried into the Arts in the Airport exhibition by the Knoxville Arts & Culture Alliance spring 2015.
Jody is the author of two books. The first, “Soul Provider: Conversations With My Cat,” showcases 20 paintings of her cat’s face, along with entries from her journal as she struggled to survive both physically and emotionally from cancer. The book won a Nautilus Book Award in 2014. Her most recent book is “Sanctuary: The Will to Live, The Courage to Love.” This book reveals Jody’s awakening to the undeniable oneness of all sentient beings through her series of farm animal portraits, their imagined stories, and poignant inspirational quotes.

Jody is an active member of the Authors Guild of Tennessee and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville. With her cancer in remission, Jody continues to work from the heart and passionately feed her creative soul every day.
